SABC3 and African Renaissance Productions launched their new reality documentary series, MAN on the 14th of January 2010 at Mavericks Gentlemen’s Club. The red carpet event saw celebrities, press, musicians, fans, bloggers and a smattering of Mavericks ladies mingling in anticipation of South Africa’s hottest reality documentary.
Marc Lottering and Dene Botha entertained an enthusiastic audience as they introduced the four characters of MAN, with some light banter and the odd personal question, while video clips gave the guests a taste of things to come.
Carducci clad Kaizer, Maurice, Henri and Trevor stepped out of the screens and onto the red carpet to greet the press for interviews and photos while barmen frantically prepared cocktails for the three hundred strong audience, accepting Durex sponsored condoms as drinks tokens while a chorus of hostesses served decadent treats. Reds, blacks and silver, cherries, strawberries and chocolates, mojito’s and cosmopolitans all paved the way for this elaborate launch. The red carpet set against a backdrop of Man speech bubbles completed by guests set the tone for the evening’s festivities.
By South African standards, this was no ordinary launch party. Venue aside, no series has taken publicity and hype to this level. Not only has a gorilla style marketing campaign raised eyebrows and certainly turned some heads, the scope of lateral thought put into MAN has certainly raised the bar for South African productions of the future.
The show itself is an unscripted honest account of what men are thinking, what makes them tick and how the apply themselves in pursuit of love, lust and possibly relationships. Besides an eclectic cast, one of the most striking features of this show is the setting. Rarely has Cape Town been painted in such a multi faceted light, breath taking as it is inspirational.
Judging by cheers and applause Man is set to wag tongues, coin phrase and populate controversy as it explores what it is are men thinking.
