The Search Continues

Bloemfontein

The search begun on the 8th of February at the city of ‘Roses’, Bloemfontein in the Free State. The aim was to find the gem that will grace our viewers with his charm, good looks and intellect. When the search team arrived at the region’s SABC offices the crowds of hopefuls were eagerly waiting to dazzle our judges, creator of Isidingo Gray Hofmeyer, The Star Tonight’s Debashine Thangevelo and our very own brand manager Mpotseng Lebentlele, with their talent. For a small city the turnout was outstanding with aspirant males coming from as far as Ladysmith and Kimberley. The talent was as colourful and vibrant as the city’s fashion sense, with the likes of Pule Ndaba and Angelo Mockie being chosen as the region’s finalists.

It was an amazing experience for both the search team and the ambitious undiscovered actors and certainly set the tone for the next four regions that our team will be visiting.

We loved Bloem and believe that this small city will definitely produce some of the best talent this country will see.

Port Elizabeth

Next stop was in the friendly city of Port Elizabeth – the hopefuls in this region were dressed the part and definitely looked as if they had just popped out of a TV scene.

The venue was the City Hall and according to the region’s SABC staff members some of the hopefuls were too eager to wait for the 10th of February and decided to camp outside the SABC offices to be the first to jet off to the City Hall and charm the panel. The talent in PE was not as breathtaking as what we had discovered during the first auditions. However, the excitement, paired with nerves, was as jubilant as that we had experienced two days prior.

Next stop – the Zulu Kingdom at the Durban SABC Offices on Old Fort Road, the 12th of February from 8am. See you then!

Big night for 'Avatar' at the Golden Globes

And it didn't disappoint. The sci-fi epic was named best film drama at the ceremony, beating off competition from Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and George Clooney's latest venture, Up In The Air, which had received the most nominations.

It also secured the best director award, leading film maker James to tell the star-studded audience: "This is the best job in the world, it really is."

The evening – in no way dampened by the inclement weather - saw many of Hollywood's biggest stars honoured, including Oscar-winner Meryl Streep.

She won the top actress in a comedy gong for her turn in Julie & Julia, in which she stars as famed American chef Julia Child.

Accepting her award she modestly commented: "In my long career I've played so many extraordinary women I'm being mistaken for one."

Robert Downey Jr picked up the best comedy actor for Sherlock Holmes, receiving laughter when he quipped: "First of all I'd like to thank Susan Downey for telling me that Matt Damon was going to win so don’t bother to prepare a speech."

Sandra Bullock earned the title of best film actress for her drama The Blind Side, and Jeff Bridges was named best dramatic actor for his role as a down-and-out singer in Crazy Heart.

The 60-year-old star, who has been nominated a number of times but has never won, received a standing ovation but quickly begged the crowd to sit back down.

"You're really screwing up my underappreciated status," he joked.

Dexter actor Michael C Hall – who recently revealed he is being treated for Hodgkin's lymphoma – was named best TV actor for his portrayal of the serial killer with ethics.

And Martin Scorsese was presented with a lifetime achievement award by Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro.

While the evening was hosted by top English comedian Ricky Gervais, the British contingent, including Emily Blunt, Helen Mirren and newcomer Carey Mulligan, failed to pick up any big awards.

But that didn’t stop them bringing extra glamour to the event on the red carpet.

Brad takes Maddox to a football on a night of the Golden Awards

As the rest of Hollywood prepared for Sunday’s Golden Globes award ceremony, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie preferred to sit things out and spend some quality time with the kids.

Brad enjoyed a father-son outing with eldest boy Maddox to an American football game in New Orleans on Saturday.

Sporting his now familiar long beard – grown for his current movie role – the Ocean’s Eleven star and his son were cheered by fans as they walked to their pitch-side seats at the New Orleans Saints versus Arizona Cardinals game.

The 11-year-old, whom mum Angelina Jolie adopted from a Cambodian orphanage in 2002, clutched an American football and stayed close to father’s side as the pair watched the home team storm to a 45-14 win.

And while the boys were busy watching the game, mum Angelina Jolie was out shopping with her two eldest daughters in California.

Following their family toy-buying trip earlier in the week, the Changeling actress took Zahara, five, and three-year-old Shiloh out to buy groceries at an organic supermarket in Sherman Oaks.

It's thought the couple, who recently donated $1 million to the Haiti earthquake relief fund, decided not to attend this year's Golden Globe ceremony because Brad was not individually nominated for his role in Quentin Tarantino flick Inglourious Basterds.

MAN among Mavericks

SABC3 and African Renaissance Productions launched their new reality documentary series, MAN on the 14th of January 2010 at Mavericks Gentlemen’s Club. The red carpet event saw celebrities, press, musicians, fans, bloggers and a smattering of Mavericks ladies mingling in anticipation of South Africa’s hottest reality documentary.

Marc Lottering and Dene Botha entertained an enthusiastic audience as they introduced the four characters of MAN, with some light banter and the odd personal question, while video clips gave the guests a taste of things to come.

Carducci clad Kaizer, Maurice, Henri and Trevor stepped out of the screens and onto the red carpet to greet the press for interviews and photos while barmen frantically prepared cocktails for the three hundred strong audience, accepting Durex sponsored condoms as drinks tokens while a chorus of hostesses served decadent treats. Reds, blacks and silver, cherries, strawberries and chocolates, mojito’s and cosmopolitans all paved the way for this elaborate launch. The red carpet set against a backdrop of Man speech bubbles completed by guests set the tone for the evening’s festivities.

By South African standards, this was no ordinary launch party. Venue aside, no series has taken publicity and hype to this level. Not only has a gorilla style marketing campaign raised eyebrows and certainly turned some heads, the scope of lateral thought put into MAN has certainly raised the bar for South African productions of the future.

The show itself is an unscripted honest account of what men are thinking, what makes them tick and how the apply themselves in pursuit of love, lust and possibly relationships. Besides an eclectic cast, one of the most striking features of this show is the setting. Rarely has Cape Town been painted in such a multi faceted light, breath taking as it is inspirational.

Judging by cheers and applause Man is set to wag tongues, coin phrase and populate controversy as it explores what it is are men thinking.

New Top Billing Presenter

For the past 17 years, SABC 3’S Top Billing has been synonymous with the best of the good life, and our presenters are known for being the best of the best in lifestyle and entertainment TV.

With the bubbly Jeannie D and hunky Janez having embarked on their 26 week around the world trip with Top Travel, and the stylish Nico Panagio kicking off a 13 week stint in reality TV, Tswelopele Productions have been on the lookout for two vivacious and charming personalities to add to their award-winning team.

Says Tswelopele Chairperson, Basetsana Kumalo “Due to the huge interest and constant demand – we hold presenter auditions on a regular basis, and we are always on the lookout for top talent that can add that ‘X’ factor to South Africa’s most loved lifestyle show.

It is with this in mind that we are proud to announce the newest arrival to the Top Billing presenter family – FHM’s Sexiest Woman in the World for 2009, Lyndall Jarvis.”

Capetonian Lyndall was an easy choice as Top Billing’s newest Presenter. Her striking appearance, down-to-earth nature and effortless style earned her an amazing one million votes in the Sexiest Woman contest.

Lyndall is no stranger to the camera either, having already featured in international commercials, music videos and advertisements as part of her successful modeling career.

Her reaction - “I couldn't believe it when they phoned me to tell me the good news! I'm absolutely thrilled. It’s a once in a life time opportunity and I can't wait to get started!”

Says Top Billing Executive Producer, Patience Stevens “It’s not easy finding a presenter who has all the right attributes to appeal to our viewers, and who can match the very high standards set by our presenting team.

Bassie and I selected Lyndall from a host of applicants and we’re pleased that SABC3 GM Mathe Mosito-Okaba, and her team ratified our choice. We hope that Lyndall will be a great asset both to Top Billing and to SABC3.”

Commenting on Nico Panagio’s temporary departure, SABC 3’s Mathe Mosito-Okaba is encouraging and positive, “We are so pleased Nico has got this job due to the experience and exposure he has gained on SABC3 and Top Billing, and wish him much success with this new project.”

The good news to Top Billing fans and aspirant presenters - Lyndall will hopefully be joined by an equally talented male presenter soon. Extensive auditions will be carried out countrywide to find the ideal candidate to compliment the Top Billing team in Nico’s absence.

So if you are a young, attractive, intelligent and charming male with presenting skills, watch this space and you could be the newest Top Billing presenter!

George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis Go Public

George Clooney attended the Venice Film Festival with new girlfriend, Italian MTV reporter Elisabetta Canalis.

George Clooney attended the Venice Film Festival with new girlfriend, Italian MTV reporter Elisabetta Canalis. It was their first public appearance. Italian papers are already comparing the new couple to the infamous duo Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. People.com reports Clooney and Canalis have been inseparable in the past three weeks. The two remain secluded in Clooney’s lakeside villa in Como having dinner and lounging together on his boat.

Some Hollywood gossip Web sites are running with the idea that George Clooney will bring Elisabetta Canalis as his date to the Oscars. His last girlfriend, Sarah Larson, was the first girlfriend to accompany him to the Oscars. Fueling the idea stems from the revelation that Clooney had a crush on Canalis while still dating Larson. According to actor Alessandro Siani, a mysterious car followed Siani and Elisabetta Canalis every day after filming the 2006 Italian movie, “Christmas in New York.” Siani later learned George Clooney was the mysterious passenger.

Tyra Banks reveals her new body

I did it! Talked the most smack and backed it up!

I won a "Get Fit/Get Healthy" challenge between me and my friends and colleagues, so I’ve earned my bragging rights to show off this new and improved fit ass!

On The Tyra Show, I told the world to "Kiss My Fat Ass!" two years ago, because after being attacked by the media for gaining weight, I wanted all my supportive people to know I had no shame in my game. I totally appreciate curves. Y'all know that. Well, I'm proud to say I’ve still got them!

THE PICTURES YOU SEE HERE HAVE NOT BEEN ALTERED. It’s my body. The imperfections are real, but so are the newly toned arms (never had muscles before)!!!
